On September 15, 2026, Asst. Prof. Dr. Butsaban Sukkan, a faculty member from the School of Pharmacy at Walailak University, presented her community-engaged project titled “From Thai Cardamom to a Healthy and Sustainable Community: Integrating Sustainable Herbal Logistics with Diabetes Risk Assessment and Health Literacy” at the WU SDG DAY 2026, held at Hua Taphan Meeting Room, Walailak University Hospital.
The initiative integrates pharmaceutical science, herbal research, and supply chain logistics to bridge community diabetes prevention with the valorization of local Thai cardamom. Implemented across two target communities in Nakhon Si Thammarat—Ban Thung Chon (Tha Sala District) and Ban Khao Wang (Ron Phibun District)—the outreach expands health literacy, diabetes risk screening, and safe herbal usage across diverse groups, including village health volunteers, bedridden patient caregivers, and migrant workers. This directly aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), specifically Indicator 3.3.2 for Health Outreach Programmes.
Complementing the public health pillar, the project empowers local livelihoods through hands-on workshops—such as formulating cardamom-based spa massage oils—and the deployment of a sustainable herbal logistics framework covering post-harvest management, quality standards, and traceability. The project achieved a 99.3% participant satisfaction rate and demonstrated an impressive Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 2.31:1, successfully connecting primary health goals (SDG 3) with broader socioeconomic impacts across SDGs 1, 2, 4, 12, and 17.
