Background of School of Pharmacy

Walailak University, with the consent of the cabinet, developed the entire area of the university to be “Chaloem Phra Kiat Education Park” to honor King Rama IX for The Fiftieth Anniversary (Golden Jubilee) Celebrations of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne. The area comprised of 11 parks: His Majesty The King Park, Seminar and Demonstration Park, Thai Taksin Park, Thamnithat Park, Education Region, Botanical Garden, Forest Park, Archaeological Park, Environmental Park, and Science and Technology Park. “Medical Center”, a significant component that is located in this area, is the learning resource of specific profession for medical students, nursing students, medical technology students, pharmacy students, physical therapy students, and students of other fields. Moreover, it provides medical service and researches. According to the demand of people in Nakhon Si Thammarat, who would like School of Medical and School/curriculum of Health Science, Walailak University initiated “Health System Development Project” (with the cooperation with public and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province). The project operated in three aspects.

          1) Producing physicians and medical personnel (for Ministry of Public Health) to resolve the problem of medical personnel shortage by collaborating with hospitals and community health centers in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Provincial Administration Organization, and District Administrative Organization.
          2) Distributing personnel (the scholarship graduates supported by Provincial Administration Organization, and District Administrative Organization) to the desired area constantly.
          3) Conducting research to study the primary health service model to become more efficient and practical for other areas.

Therefore, health system development project emphasizing on Nakhon Si Thammarat and the upper Southern Thailand was planned. Organizational structure for management was determined for the holistic cooperation called “College of Health Sciences” which was being operated as “the new school” and the existing school, and “Research Institute for Health Science, Walailak University” that connected to the main existent organization: School of Allied Health sciences, School of Nursing, and Research and Development Institute.

This project produced and distributed physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists, Applied Thai Traditional Physician to the areas in Nakhon Si Thammarat and the upper Southern Thailand that these people were in demand. In addition, the research on community public health in primary level was operated to enhance its efficiency to be the model for other areas.

Health Sciences Committee Meeting No. 1/2005 on 6 June 2005, at 10.30-12.00 at Mokkhalan Room, 2nd Fl., Administration Building, Waliluk University, Academic Council of Waliluk University Meeting No. 6/2005 on 30 June 2005, at 1.30 at Mokkhalan Room, 2nd Fl., Administration Building, Waliluk University, and University Council of Waliluk University Meeting No. 3/2005 on 9 July 2005, at 9.00 at Mokkhalan Room, 2nd Fl., Administration Building, Waliluk University, had considered and agreed with the health system development project and the structure which comprised of College of Health Sciences, Research Institute of College of Health Sciences, Waliluk University, and the new School (School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy).

The University compiled the additional details regarding the establishment of new school and appointed the Pharmaceutical Sciences Curriculum Committee according to the University Decree No. 202/2005 to produce and develop the curriculum (New curriculum 2006), which comprised of:

Pharmaceutical Sciences Curriculum (New curriculum 2006) and the establishment project of School of Pharmacy had been approved by Academic Council No.10/2005 on 29 December 2005.

The committee had studied on the research for operating Pharmaceutical Sciences Program, which was in accordance with the Ninth Health Development Strategy, and examined the additional details of pharmacist-party for the consideration of the University Council of Walailak University Meeting. Pharmaceutical Sciences Curriculum (New curriculum 2006) and the establishment project of School of Pharmacy were approved from the University Council of Walailak University Meeting 1/2005 on 11 March 2008, at 9.00 at Mokkhalan Room, and were agreed by the Office of the Higher Education Commission on 20 March 2007. The Pharmacy Council of Thailand acknowledged Pharmaceutical Sciences Curriculum (New curriculum 2006).

Thereafter, Pharmaceutical Sciences Program (2008) had been adjusted, from six years to three years learning. Further, the curriculum had been revised to be Pharmaceutical Sciences Program (Revised 2011) in order to be consistent with Thai Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TQF:HEd).
