The School of Pharmacy at Walailak University hosted a community-engaged workshop (SDG) titled “Khao Wang Cardamom towards GI Products: Herbal Supply Chain for Health Products and Sustainable Community Business” from August 14–15, 2026, at Walailak University and Ban Khao Wang, Ron Phibun District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The project aimed to advance the integrated utilization of Thai cardamom across the entire value chain—from conservation and quality control to smart supply chain logistics, health product development, and market commercialization.
The initiative integrated two key research projects: developing a smart supply chain framework for cardamom in anti-diabetic health products, and extracting bioactive compounds to formulate anti-inflammatory remedies. The event brought together 30 participants, including members of the Ban Khao Wang Cardamom Community Enterprise led by Mrs. Sakina Boonphon, teachers and students from the Border Patrol Police School Plant Genetic Conservation Project, pharmacy students, faculty researchers from WU School of Pharmacy (Asst. Prof. Dr. Butsaban Sukkaew, Asst. Prof. Dr. Pajaree Sakdiset, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Autthawadee Saeyun), and Dr. Nottamon Kannika, a guest lecturer from the School of Business, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Knowledge Transfer and Hands-On Training: Educational sessions on diabetes and musculoskeletal inflammation management, standard operating procedures (SOP) for herbal logistics, and the GI registration process, accompanied by practical workshops on moisture content analysis and formulating spa massage oil from cardamom extracts.

On-Site Supply Chain and Traceability Upgrades: Fieldwork at Ban Khao Wang focused on standardizing packaging using vacuum sealers, implementing tool log books, and delivering a dual-format (paper and QR-code Google Form) Traceability System prototype to track raw materials and prepare the community for Geographical Indication (GI) certification.
This project exemplifies the practical integration of pharmaceutical sciences, logistics, and local resources to advance Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), creating economic value and enhancing community well-being through sustainable biodiversity utilization.
