NAKHON SI THAMMARAT – Walailak University continues its commitment to community welfare through its Social Engagement Service Project (SDG). On March 11, 2026, the university organized a hands-on workshop at Pathumanukul School in Tha Sala District, focusing on educating young students about musculoskeletal health and the long-term impacts of improper backpack use.
The initiative was led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Phetcharat Boonruamkaew, Project Leader, and Asst. Prof. Dr.Nuttikarn Nokkaew, Project Co-investigator, from the School of Pharmacy. This marks the second field operation of the project, which specifically targets students from Grades 1 to 5.
Key Highlights of the Activity:

Health Assessments: The team conducted health history screenings and evaluated the weight ratio of students’ backpacks relative to their body weight.

The 10–15% Rule: Students were taught the critical standard of maintaining a backpack weight between 10–15% of their total body weight to prevent chronic back and shoulder issues.

Practical Techniques: The workshop provided live demonstrations on the proper way to wear a backpack and effective methods for organizing items inside to distribute weight evenly.

Physical Wellness: Students were guided through stretching exercises designed to relieve muscle tension and promote better posture during their growing years.
This project has been officially certified by the Human Research Ethics Committee of Walailak University, ensuring high standards of safety and integrity.
By fostering health awareness among primary school students, Walailak University reaffirms its role as a “University for Society.” The program directly aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, contributing to the sustainable development of health and wellness within the local community.
