Promising Anti-MRSA Activity of Brevibacillus sp. Isolated from Soil and Strain Improvement by UV Mutagenesis

This project focused on the isolation of soil bacteria that could produce the antibacterial compounds against Staphylococcus aureus and its resistant strains (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). An isolate, named SPR-20, exhibited the highest anti-MRSA activity, and it was identified as Brevibacillus sp. SPR-20. The active compounds in the culture supernatants were more stable as the activity remained more than 90% when subjected to any harmful treatments. SPR-20 was mutagenized by UV radiation to generate the mutant strains that increased antibacterial activity by 10 – 20%. Therefore, SPR-20 is a potential source, and it needs further investigation to search for the novel compounds in the era of antibiotic resistance.
